Matrixyl appears to combine two matrikines, namely palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. It is a small molecule that is considered to be highly porous in the skin. Structurally, it is similar to collagen precursors. Researchers suggest that the peptide may act to promote the process of repair in the lower layers of damaged skin cell tissues, and has also been termed an “anti-wrinkle” peptide due to the apparent impact it has on wrinkle depth and crease development. It appears to participate in the neosynthesis of extracellular matrix macromolecules.[2] For example, the researchers note that “Delicate balance between the wound healing properties and pro-fibrotic abilities of pentapeptide should be considered for … scar prevention.” In the presence of Matrixyl, the dermal layers may begin to heal themselves, possibly resulting in an acceleration of the natural processes of healing and closure of wounds via cells known as fibroblasts. Fibroblasts appear to gradually lose their capacity for collagen production over time.
Matrixyl was discovered through two independent streams of dermatological research: the search for substances that accelerate repair in damaged skin cells and the exploration of the causes of wrinkle development.[3] Matrixyl appears to act as a signaling molecule that may potentially stimulate collagen and elastin production. Similar to copper peptides, Matrixyl has been suggested to stimulate the lower layers of skin cells to repair damaged tissues in an accelerated manner. Matrixyl appears to stimulate the “matrix” layers in the epidermis – primarily collagen and fibronectin. Cell aging has been divided by researchers into intrinsic and extrinsic types. Intrinsic cell aging occurs via a degenerative process characterized by the loss of collagen. This process results in wrinkling and thinning of the skin and loss of elasticity, and increased stiffness. Matrixyl may signal the extracellular matrix to produce elastin and collagen, potentially combatting cell aging phenomenon.
Researchers have suggested that in the course of study findings, that Matrixyl may potentially induce collagen synthesis by up to 117% over control levels, collagen IV synthesis by up to 327%, and hyaluronic acid synthesis by up to 267%. [4] The researchers also noted that certain synergistic compounds may have contributed to an increase in these finding results.[5]
